Although taxes artificially inflate petrol prices in the UK, the underlying trend in recent years has been the global increase in crude oil prices. We have become accustomed to oil production offshore, but it is perhaps not widely recognised that shallow water production is in long term decline.

Oil production in the USA peaked in 1970 and has never recovered. Most easily accessible oil reserves, both onshore and offshore, will not be able to expand to meet the worlds growing thirst for energy. Over the past decade or so there has been a push to explore oil reserves in more hostile zones, from the high arctic tundra to the deep water zones on continental shelf margins. Such oil extraction is more demanding and costly, but the economics coupled with supply and demand realities speak for themselves.
