OIL LABORATORY

Oil Analysis Tests
WEAR METAL Analysis.Analyses concentration of wear elements.
VISCOSITY Test.Measured automatically in Centistokes at 40 and 100 degrees centrigarde
FT-IR Test. For engine oil.Detects soot, oxidation, nitration and sulfur products/acids. Also detects contamination by water, fuel and glycol from coolant.
PARTICLE QUANTIFIER (PQ)Test. Results are based on the ferrous particle contamination. If the results are high then further tests/examinations may be made to determine large metal particle presence.
MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION.This is linked to the PQ test.
FUEL Test.Automatically done on all diesel engine oil analysis. Percentage of fuel present is done by identifying the flash point.
ANTIFREEZE Test. For all water cooled compartments.
CRACKLE TEST. Pre water test by hot plate heat application. Used prior to other water tests.
WATER Test. For all samples to deternmine the presence of water, This can then be identified as coolant or from external/internal condensation etc.
TBN Test.Routine for all gas engines.
PARTICLE Count.Reported in ISO count. For all oils related to hydraulic applications and transmissions.
KARL FISCHER MOISTURE Test.Determines the precise % amount of water present.
MAGNETIC Test.If a sample is found to have high levels of metal contamination this test is used to identify the source/origin.
COOLANT Analysis.Test for all coolants assists in identifying the coolant properties.
Not all tests are applicable as it depends on the sample provided. We are pleased to advise on what tests are used and required for your application.
Wear patterns are best established after 3 oil samples have been analysed and it is important that the samples are taken from the same sampling point.

Tests & Standards
The following tests are covered under the standard sample price.
Other services & tests are available at extra cost.
1) Full spectrographic analysis of wear metals, oil additives, contaminants by ICP,
ASTM D5185
Readings are in ppm ( parts per million ).
2) Total ferrous debris, including large particles. Using a 51FW meter.
Units are dimensionless.
3) Viscosity in centistokes at 40 deg.c. ASTM D445.
4) Infrared analysis of engine samples to monitor oil condition and degradation.
Reported as % allowable.
5) Water analysis. ASTM D1744.
6) The following are also carried out at the discretion of the interpreter:
Fuel contamination by closed-cup flash point. ASTM D93
Anti-freeze by wet chemical analysis,
Ferrography is carried out when necessary. Photographic evidence can also be included to support/record the findings.
7) TAN & TBN are also available to IP417.
The report comes with a recommendation if required which is based on knowledge of similar or known components, derived from many years in the oil analysis field.
The standard report layout (sample on request) is typically in pdf format, and e-mailed to
facilitate a fast turnaround.
For users of the Emerson RBM software the raw data is e-mailed for direct import, thus enabling easy handling and management of data.
